Photographs from the Meat Market on MG Road, Pune, Maharashtra, India.
21.00 hours and the market is free from customers; only sellers and their wares shine through the darkness ; Cleaning up and packaging remains. The market reeks of the sea. On a stale June night, the air is thick and morbid. Sales are not good. They say one mustn't eat seafood in the months that don't contain an 'R'. I've heard different theories - fish are pregnant during these months and hence killing fish is a graver crime during these times. I've also heard the usual - it rains and hence the water bodies get murky - fish eat murky food.
None-the-less, sales aren't good. The market is empty except for sellers, dead fish, cats and some aimless children looking for inspiration.
